Oscar Glow and Paul Blart Dough

oscarJust a quick blog this morning, as the “serious” film goers of the world digest the Oscar nominations.  Hollywood loves to ballyhoo about the art of movie making, but putting fannies in the seats is the real goal.  So, yes, while The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Reader are all worthy endeavours … it’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop that rules the box office right now.

blartBlart was filmed right here in Massachusetts at the Burlington Mall, and made more than $33 Million Dollars last weekend.  It’s a goofball movie, with an affable star, Kevin James.  Don’t expect Mr. James to be rubbing shoulders with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn anytime soon, but I’m sure in the world of dollar/invested to profit/returned old Kevin might be the guy with the real golden touch.

Here’s the other thing, and probably the most important over all … a half a dozen or so Paul Blart’s make it possible to make important films like Milk and The Reader economically feasible.

So don’t get all snooty if you’re waiting in line to get your Frost/Nixon tickets this weekend, and the rest of the crowd is piling in to see Blart … they’ve actually helped get your movie on the screen.

Have a great weekend.
